Priyanka's fan

Don't get your imagination running wild just yet! Tripti did only what she was told to. You heard that right. Anurag Basu himself made her catch him by his collar and abuse him similar to what he made Priyanka Chopra do at the script narration of BARFEE!
24 year old Gurgaon based, Trupti Bansal was overwhelmed to be given the opportunity to live Priyanka Chopra's life for 1 whole day. Little did PC aka Priyanka know that here was a fan that was already privy to trivia about the Bareilly lass!
The unassuming damsel was welcomed by a troupe of male dancers, jiving to ANJAANA ANJAANI at the lobby of a 5 star hotel. That's not it! They even pulled down their pants a la Ranbir style from the same film! The grand welcome was followed by yet another surprise - a presidential suite with lots of junk food (PC is a junk food Junkie). And taking cue from Priyanka's reel life, Trupti was made to perform some action packed stunts! The only difference being that Trupti managed to sprain her ankle while at it! The doctor advised her complete rest. However, the sporting lass decided to wear a brave face and carry on with the routine that PC had planned with so much love.
Having experienced so many facets of Priyanka's persona, how could she have missed the 'Diva' in her? The 'Diva' in Trupti was brought out through a photo session with the very renowned photographer, Jatin Kampani and then a surprise visit by the 'Diva' herself with gifts that boast of Ferragamo Shoes, fancy mobile phones and more!

Fitness Mantras Of Deepika

Drop-dead gorgeous looks, a sizzling figure and some decent bit of acting: that's Deepika Padukone.
While women envy her perfect, hour-glass figure, men desire her and get inspired to reach her fitness level. But this frame didn't come easy. Deepika has had her share of sweat and rigour which has visibly paid-off well.
From being a sports fanatic and an ace model to a prized talent in Bollywood, “Deepi” has come long way. Chances are that she did inherit the sports gene from her father Prakash Padukone who was a fit badminton player, however, her hard work and strict diet regime were the two things which did wonders for the South Indian hottie.
Let's unwrap the secrets behind the awesome fitness of this svelte beauty:
Deepika's Workout Regime
Though not a gym-addict, Deepika keeps hitting the gym frequently. “I go to the gym whenever I can. When I am travelling, I do make it a point to work out in the hotel gym,” says Deepika. Her typical workout routine is a fine mix of cardio and weight training, which Deepika believes is helpful in “losing/maintaining weight and toning up the body.”
Deepika has incorporated yoga into her daily fitness regimen. She maintains that yoga helps in revitalizing the mind and soul and turns out to be a great workout. On days, she is unable to go to the gym, she goes for walks, which she says are great cardio exercises. “If I can't go to the gym, I walk twice a day, half an hour in the morning and half an hour in the evening,” declares Deepika.
Deepika is a dance aficionado and that has benefitted her tremendously when it comes to fitness. In fact, this is something which sets the 24-year-old beauty apart from her contemporaries. When not really in a mood for the gym, she loves stomping her foot and shaking a leg. And boy! She is proficient in several dance forms: Bharat Natyam, Kathak, Jazz and many more. “In my modeling days, this dance training gave me grace and poise; today, it helps to keep me fit,” reveals Padukone.
Also, Deepika says that much of her body's flexibility and agility is owing to the days she used to play badminton. She used to do a lot of running before picking up the racked and this, she says, has given her the amazing flexibility.
Deepika's Diet Routine
When it comes to food, Deepika has no qualms about it. She's a self-confessed foodie and loves gorging on delicacies. For her, starvations are a strict no-no. But she eats with responsibility. On days, she has binged on good food, she makes sure that she does an appropriate amount of workout. “Only diet or only exercise won't help in overall body weight loss. You have to combine the two” she explains.
Deepika's breakfast is chiefly composed of South Indian stuff - upma, idli, dosa etc. She may include paranthas at times.During shoots, she sticks to “ghar ka khana”: the regular dal, chapati, rice, salad and subzi. If the food is from the studio, Deepika prefers going for idlis as they are light. Deepika has a thing for rice and doesn't let go of it like many others following a fitness regime. She says that her body is used to it. Snacks for Deepika are mainly fruits like grapes, mangoes and her all-time favourite coconut water. For dinner, she keeps it light. No rice and no non-veg food. She normally goes for porridge with pickle and homemade dal and steamed subzi.
Not many people would know (and believe) that Deepika is smitten by dark chocolates! And she's trying hard to get over with this addiction as she realizes that dark chocolate is oozing with calories.
Deepika's Fitness Tips
Fitness does not tantamount to being skinny or slim. One should be healthy from inside too.
Combine exercise and diet. Just one of the two things is not enough.
Incorporate sports like badminton in your fitness regime.
It's a misconception that doing weights make you bulky.

Mamata on golden Wednesday

For West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Wednesday turned out to be a golden day. Besides a thumping victory in her maiden assembly poll, she also witnessed the Singur Act passed by her government being held valid in court.
Her party Trinamool Congress also wrested the Barihat (Uttar) constituency in North 24 Parganas from the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M).
Dedicating to the people her electoral victory from the Bhowanipore constituency in a by-poll, Banerjee said: 'It is the victory of the people. In spite of lack of canvassing and low turnout, the margin suggests the love people have for me and the party.'
The 56-year-old leader won the seat with a 54,000-plus margin defeating her nearest rival, CPI-M's Nandini Mukherjee, a computer science professor.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee congratulated her on the victory.
She accused her rival CPI-M of undermining the 'Ma, Mati, Manush' (mother, land and people - Banerjee's pet) slogan.
'The CPI-M never gave a thought to the welfare of the Ma, Mati, Manush. The party only thought about its own cadres. The state has an acute shortage of employment and infrastructure.'
She also said the Marxists resorted to illegal and unfair means to remain in power for three and a half decades.
She congratulated the people of Basirhat (Uttar) constituency of North 24 Parganas district where party candidate A.T.M. Abdulla won after the seat fell vacant following the death of CPI-M legislator Mostafa Bin Quasem who allegedly committed suicide.
She referred to Quasem as her brother and offered condolence to his family.
Hailing the Singur verdict, Banerjee called it 'a victory of the people' that would pave the way for return of land to farmers.
'It is a historic event not only for Singur or the country but for the whole world. The Singur movement will forever be an example of struggle and victory for the world.'
'When I came up with the Act, many so-called experts and critics criticised me and came up with unsolicited advice. They even called the whole exercise to be futile. But the verdict has vindicated my efforts,' said Banerjee.
Earlier, the Calcutta High Court ruled the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Act passed by the government was valid and constitutional.

Planning for perfect college

College annual fest is the event that students eagerly wait for. Apart from the fun, frolic and platform that it offers to students to exhibit their talents, the fest is also an acid test of some students' managerial skills, as well as the flexibility in decision-making of the teachers. So, what goes into organising an inter-collegiate fest that draws big sponsor money and even bigger crowds?
It all begins with the forming of a core committee that includes teaching staff as well as student representatives. Students carry out the creative, administrative and logistical part of the festival, but all powers of approval (and disapproval) lie with the teachers, who head the committee. Students and teachers tell us about the goings-on behind closed organising committee doors:
Gayathri Iyer, third year BA (Communicative English), Mount Carmel College: The teachers who are part of the welfare committee that organises ‘Cul-ah,' our annual cultural fest, have the final say when it comes to funding, permission and other matters. They do essentially draw the line for us, and are an approval body. Reaching a consensus is difficult and the final verdict is given by them, which we cannot question. Despite this, I feel they are a requirement. Their expertise in matters such as administration is especially helpful.
Divya R.C., Welfare Committee Officer, Mount Carmel College: When it comes to organising festivals, most of the job is done by students. Our job is just to monitor their plans and give information, as well as to provide them with rules and regulations to follow.
We make sure that execution of all decisions is under the college framework. With regards to participation in the organising process, teachers and students always work together. It is a learning process for them, and I'm sure they feel they need us. As for reaching a consensus, in committee meetings, we sit down and discuss all festival matters with students. Additionally, there are senior and junior officers within the committee, among whom consultation and consensus is necessary.
Shariq Rafeek, Academic Coordinator, Student Union of St. Joseph's College of Commerce: I feel that at some level, teachers should be involved. When there are untoward incidents, it is the institution's reputation that is tarnished. The teachers should know what we are doing. Further, when we are organising our festivals ‘Chanakya', 'Kalotsav' or 'Cipher', teachers pitch in with appealing ideas. After all, the best ideas come out only when there are more minds involved. There needs to be control over what we, as festival planners, are allowed or not allowed to do. Since teachers are involved from the very start, we know what to expect and give suggestions accordingly. They take our opinions and ideas into account as well.
Sneha Rai, Student Governor, Student Council of St. Joseph's College of Commerce: The teachers' involvement in organising festivals is in drawing the final guidelines. We ensure that all ideas, activities and events are kept in check, and are in line with the expectations and ethos of the college. The way the council works is such that activities are proposed by students, and then approved by teachers. I feel students need the practical touch that teachers provide. They go with ideas that are based on hype and popularity. They may not have the vision that teachers have in the organising process. But they do bring a lot of ideas to the table. We usually approve them based on whether they match our expectations. Most of the time, we adjust and give the students their space.
Fasila Hanis, third year B.A., St. Aloysius College: We faced several problems when it came to organising our annual festival ‘Artbeat.' The teachers who were part of the organising committee rejected many of the themes we had suggested for our festival. They wanted the theme to be ‘socially relevant'.
With this example in mind, I think it's important that students should be heard out. As organisers, we wanted to pick a theme that's fun. Students should be granted a certain amount of freedom in such matters. I wish that teachers would learn to adjust. Everyone has his/her own opinion, and when we have committee meetings, they should give our ideas equal weight.
Aditi Gaitonde, M.Sc. Communication, Christ University: I think organising festivals with teachers is quite difficult. As committee head for our media festival ‘Media Meet,' I realised it was a very dicey situation. The teachers give us freedom and at the same time, tell us where we go wrong. We always keep them in the loop with regards to our activities.
When there are meetings, we put our ideas together, and we need them for their approval, to keep us grounded. Being a post-graduate student, I think it gave us leeway since teachers knew we were more mature with responsibility. I don't think we can do without teachers in the organising committee, though. Students don't tend to handle responsibility well!

Tips you can use

Your children are doing it all - school, tuitions, homework and play. The obvious fall guy is nutrition. Here are some tips to help you along. Make the kitchen off-limits during the day unless it's time for a meal or a planned snack. This way you get them to stay off unhealthy knick-knack eating.
1. The days are longer, make sure your child gets enough nutrition throughout the day. Arrange for 5-6 small meals.
2. Get your children involved in the making of snacks.Younger children will especially enjoy being involved in choosing and preparing simple ones. Weave in the healthy ingredients, subtly.
3. Teach your children to make no-fire, easy snacks so that they can can prepare their own summer treats, any time.
4. Pre-portion snacks into small containers for the week - so you are able to control the amounts too!
Sharing Is Caring
For your children however, it can turn out to be their biggest nightmare. Sharing rooms between siblings can be a tough task to administer but here's what you can do to ease the trauma.
a.Divide the room space equally, especially if your children are of the same age. You do not want to be part of the daily bickering over room space.
b.Set guidelines, but leave room for flexibility. "Lights out at 10", does not mean that one can't study when needed, it only means that one is sleeping peacefully while his brother/sister studies in the study/common room. Or simply provide for focus lamps.
c.Make sure the few rules you set are not flouted, come what may. Divide TV and computer timings if they share these.
d.Give them their space - don't barge into their room. But do check on them occasionally. Involve them in the cleaning of their room and with the decor.
e.Finally, if there's a difference of opinion, don't rush in to arbitrate. Let them try to figure it out themselves and get into it only if things get out of hand. This way they realise they are the "owners" of the room.

Important Manners

We all want to raise our little ones to be polite and well behaved, and learning those lessons starts at home. It's never too early to teach your little ones basic manners! Here are eight of the most important manners you should try to teach your little ones before they go to school. They won't remember them all, or get them right every time, but patience and perseverance should get you through:
1. Always say please and thank you.
Whether they're activities as small as giving your little one a snack, or them asking if they can play in the garden, always reinforce the importance of saying please and thank you. No matter how young your children are, you can't start enforcing this rule too early!
2. Table manners
When your tiny tots are just learning to eat at the table, start teaching them the manners you'd like them to have for the rest of their lives! Rules like not eating with their mouths open, or not putting their elbows on the table, are good life lessons for your children to learn as soon as possible.
3. Play dates
When you're little ones go on play dates, or to birthday parties, remind them to thank their friends parents for having them over. If you aren't going to be attending the play date or event with your little one, ensure your little ones know they should treat their friends parents (and all grown-ups) with the same respect they treat you.
4. Birthday party etiquette
It's often said that kids go wild at birthday parties - all the sweet snacks and fun can make little ones get excited, and sometimes forget their manners. But no matter how excited your little one is on their birthday, there are some manners they shouldn't forget: to open their presents thoughtfully (not ripping off the paper, or tossing the present to one side as soon as they've seen it) and to say thank you for every gift, and to every attendee.
5. Mind the language
There will come a moment every parent dreads: the moment your little one swears. And then finds it funny! The worst thing you can do in this scenario is laugh. Let them know that you already know that word, you think it's unpleasant, not funny, and ask your little one not to use it again!
6. Don't be mean
Kids tease each other, and they find it funny. But this can sometimes go a step too far and lead to bullying. Make sure your little ones don't call others mean names, and don't make fun of anyone for any reason. Ganging up on someone else is cruel, not clever.
7. Excuse me!
Once your little ones have mastered saying please and thank you, teach them to say excuse me. It's the polite thing to say when you have to interrupt someone, or bump into somebody.
8. TMI!
There are some things that are too much information, and that your little ones shouldn't talk about in public! These include genitals, poo, nose picking, and all the other gory things that amuse kids!

Govinda Of Threatening Him

Get Care Lesson Of Hospitals

Private hospitals in Delhi that received land at a concession from the government must honour their undertaking to treat poor patients free of charge, the Supreme Court today said in a verdict that can have an impact in other states too.
The court allowed the hospitals to recoup the cost from private donors and sponsors or "by any other means", which should include cross-subsidisation by raising rates for other patients.
The judgment can encourage the filing of public interest petitions in other states to get private hospitals that got cheap land to fulfil their commitments.
In Bengal, private hospitals often have the whole or part of the salami on land waived, a health department official said.
The hospitals usually have to agree to "provide total or partial support for treatment of the poor", he said, which means waiving bed and surgery charges, cost of medicine and doctors' fees.
In Delhi, 40-odd private hospitals had given a commitment to provide free treatment to 25 per cent of outpatients and 10 per cent of indoor patients. The apex court lambasted them for trying to wriggle out of it.
It set a monthly income of Rs 6,422 or less as the cut-off that defines "poor" in this context, and said this would include patients from outside Delhi, "even a foreigner", and those referred by government hospitals that lack the treatment facilities.
The court said the poor would only need to fill in a hospital form to get the benefit: no proof of income would be required. The order upheld a March 2007 Delhi High Court judgment asking private hospitals to provide free treatment to the poor or return the government land.
Several private hospitals in and around Delhi claimed they do offer free treatment. A Fortis spokesperson said that at three hospitals under the network, "anyone who holds a BPL card can avail of this facility. Until now, consumables (accessories such as stents, implants, ocular lens) were being charged but we'll abide by the revised regulations."
The Apollo Indraprastha admits 60 to 75 people daily under the poor patients scheme, Apollo sources said. They pay only for medicines and consumables (now made free by the apex court).
The hospitals have been asked to maintain records about the patients and hand them over to the government if demanded.

While you're enjoying playing games in the garden, give a thought to decorating your outside space. There are lots of fun and interesting things to do without spending tons of money...

1. Wind-Chimes - There are some beautiful wind chimes on the market, and you should be able to find some that suit your style and budget. However, you could go one step further and make your own. Study how they are made, and get the kids to join in!
Wind chimes are soothing and very compatible with gardening, so position your chimes well.
They must be in at least a slight draught, which you should be able to find outside with ease. Also, they can scare the birds away from your fruit bushes. Hang them on the patio and in the vegetable garden.

2. Lights and Lanterns - For those smooth hot summer nights. Choose candles for calm nights and opt for lanterns if there's a breeze about. Solar powered lights are a good choice as there aren't any cables, batteries or plugs to worry about. They must be in sunlight during the day to re-charge though. Large garden candles will burn for many hours and are available in all sorts of aroma-therapeutic scents. Find out more about outdoor lighting on this page... Outdoor Decorations in Outdoor Lighting

3. Garden Furniture - Outdoor decorations can even include furniture! Invest in some comfy chairs for the garden. We don't spend half as much time as we should outside, simply because we don't feel comfortable. Look at unique ways of furnishing your garden. Do you have a couple of trees a hammock could be strung between? Or how about a park-type bench with comfy cushions set under the shade of the apple tree? Whatever the style or size of your garden, look for relaxing furniture so you can fully enjoy your outside space. Find out more about outdoor furniture on this page... Outdoor Furniture

4. Fake Flowers - Well, hey, we don't all have mature gardens and fresh flowers blooming all year round! If you have to resort to a little 'deception' who cares if it looks good? Hang some pretty silk flowers on a wall, or low roof or even in a tree! If nothing else, you'll keep your visitors guessing :-)

5. Colour it up - If you still need a bit of colour around the place, get the kids involved. No, I don't mean let them loose with a tin of paint and brushes... what they could do is draw some great pictures of trees, flowers, animals etc, and you can pin them around the patio area or 'blu-tak' them to a tree or two. Remember to rescue these outdoor decorations if it rains!

6. Cut down on Big Toys - Children's outdoor toys, such as swings, slides etc; can take up loads of room in the garden, and they're not always very attractive. Look for something a little less permanent. Maybe separate items you can load away in the shed at night, or go for something completely different and build a giant chess set. Or if you really feel creative, what about a tree-house? They can always go to the park for the swings!

7. Containers - Containers make very stylish outdoor decorations. Collect large pots and grow plants you can move around the garden, every day if you like! Grow herbs and flowers and position sweet smelling plants on the patio or round your seating area. Strawberries grow very well in containers as do other useful plants. Make sure the pots aren't too heavy for you to move, or invest in a garden trolley if they are. If you grow colour co-ordinated flowers, a wonderful display can be created by positioning your pots well. Find out more about garden containers on this page... Gardening Containers

8. Wild Corner - I know this may be hard if you like a neat and tidy garden, but leaving a wild patch can be very entertaining and visually very pleasing. Nettles and other wildflowers attract butterflies and bees, and it's often suprising how delicate and colourful wildflowers can be when allowed to grow in their own space. If you're still unsure, how about building a little fence around the area and making a wooden plaque declaring it a wildlife zone...well, it was just an idea! Find out more about wildflowers on this page... Wildflowers

9. Water Features - are becoming more and more popular and also more affordable. Create a water feature that will suit your garden. Try not to be persuaded by an over-enthusiastic sales assistant trying to sell you a system that will be far too big or even too small for your outside space. Do some research before you start. There could be a fair amount of physical work involved and you should arrange some strong arm help. You could go for a full waterfall and pond or perhaps a simple water feature on your patio. Outdoor decorations can be wonderfully peaceful! Find out more about water gardens on this page... Garden Water Features

10. Rock Gardens - Rock gardens can take on different themes and colour schemes throughout the year with a little careful planning. There is again some heavy physical work involved when you're putting together your rock garden but well worth it in the end. Make sure you can get to all areas for weeding, watering etc; Try out different rock plants and flowers until you feel happy with the overall view, and even then you can change it. Nothing's set in stone! Find out more about rock gardens on this page... Rock Gardens
These are just a few ideas. Let your imagination run free and decorate your outside space with love. Read through the Garden Decor and Garden Ideas pages for more outdoor decoration ideas and resources. Or how about garden gnomes? find out more here

First pleat the graph paper in the desired intervals, then flatten it out and lay on it decorative paper to be folded. Starting at one end, refold the graph and decorative paper together to reproduce accordion pleats of uniform size.

Garland Decorations

Materials :
* Tissue Papers
* Glue

Tissue papers is more suitable for making garlands because of its fineness. Garlands can be made by gluing cut pieces of tissue papers on alternate corners. Proper adhesive is important in making garland. Ordinary white glue is suitable and should be used very sparingly and not allowed to penetrate more than one layer. A number of methods can be used for making garlands. If a garland is particularly heavy and does not hang well, a long string can be passed through the center for added support. To make a framework for hanging rings, shape a length of wire into a circle and pass the ends through a garland chain before securing. Attach ribbons at three or four points along the ring for hanging.

Tips For Home Decor

If you don't like coming back to a well-decorated home, this article is not for you. For the rest of us who appreciate tastefully designed spaces, there are a world of options to choose from. Some of these may tantalize our senses, making a bold statement or creating an individualistic expression. Some of the other options may be more subtle and sophisticated, but equally impacting. And, of course, there are tons of options in-between these two extremes.
The manner in which you decorate your living spaces showcases your unique design - this will depend on the choices you make, which in turn, will depend upon the" feel" or "experience" you want from your living space. This roundabout system of choices, one leading to another and then back to the first, may leave some of us confused!
But it's all very simple - it depends on where and how you want to start. Here are a few tips:

  • Soak up the space: Look around at the space you want to do up and answer some key questions about it, for instance, how big or small is it? Does it have a source of natural light? If yes, how big or small is the light source? What do you want to use the space for? What kind of furniture do you want to use? Where do you want to have the seating? Which walls will be busy and which walls will be available for decoration?
  • Decide a theme: The theme is the "central idea" of a space that best describes it. For example, the theme can be reflection of your personality or of your hobbies and interests. The theme reflects in each and every component of your decor - right from the furniture, carpets and curtains to the lamps, artifacts and artwork.

Safe your Kitchen

* Stow away a first-aid kit and a fire blanket in one of your cabinets.
* Ensure that there's a distance of at least 3ft between your cooking range and refrigerator. Electricity and fire never mix well.
* Never allow electric cords to trail on the countertop or the floor. There may be wet ingredients or water spills that may trigger short-circuits.
* Do not climb on countertops to reach overhead lofts. Use a step-stool instead. It's a safer, easier climb.
* Store your knives with their sharp edges inside a wooden knife block (you can find these at any quality departmental store).
* Check fortnightly for any breaks and cuts on electric cords.
* Clean up wet spillages instantly; always allow the floor to dry before walking on it.
* Avoid using multiple plugs and extensions cords - they overload the circuits and can lead to a fire.
* Avoid placing electric sockets near the sink. Install your microwave and toaster as far as possible from the sink.
* Keep your floor clear of boxes, stools, grocery bags, mopping buckets and the like to avoid any chances of tripping.
* Store all chemical cleaners in the lowest cabinet cupboard so that leaks do not contaminate food.
* Make a list of all your emergency telephone numbers such as fire, gas leakage and ambulance services and tack it up next to your telephone. You never know when you may need any of them!
* In case of a fire that's spreading due to an oil spill, cover the source with a fire blanket or a damp cloth and turn off the gas supply. Don't use water!
* If a fire starts in a microwave or oven, shut the door, keep it closed, and turn off the electricity.
* In case of cooking-gas leakage, turn off the supply line for piped gas or the valve of the gas cylinder. Open all the windows; do not use a match, or switch on lights - it could all explode in your face. If gas continues to leak, call the gas company and get out of the house. If your clothes happen to catch fire, quickly drop to the floor and roll while keeping your eyes covered.

WOMAN UNDER SOCIALISM

We live in the age of a great social Revolution, that every day makes further progress. A growingly powerful intellectual stir and unrest is noticeable in all the layers of society; and the movement pushes towards deep-reaching changes. All feel that the ground they stand on shakes. A number of questions have risen; they occupy the attention of ever widening circles; and discussion runs high on their solution. One of the most important of these, one that pushes itself ever more to the fore, is the so-called "Woman Question."

The question concerns the position that woman should occupy in our social organism; how she may unfold her powers and faculties in all directions, to the end that she become a complete and useful member of human society, enjoying equal rights with all. From our view-point, this question coincides with that other:--what shape and organization human society must assume to the end that, in the place of oppression, exploitation, want and misery in manifold forms, there shall be physical and social health on the part of the individual and of society. To us, accordingly, the Woman Question is only one of the aspects of the general Social Question, which is now filling all heads, which is setting all minds in motion and which, consequently, can find its final solution only in the abolition of the existing social contradictions, and of the evils which flow from them.

Nevertheless, it is necessary to treat the so-called Woman Question separately. On the one hand the question, What was the former position of woman, what is it to-day, and what will it be in the future? concerns, in Europe at least, the larger section of society, seeing that here the female sex constitutes the larger part of the population. On the other hand, the prevailing notions, regarding the development that woman has undergone in the course of centuries, correspond so little with the facts, that light upon the subject becomes a necessity for the understanding of the present and of the future. Indeed, a good part of the prejudices with which the ever-growing movement is looked upon in various circles--and not least in the circle of woman herself--rests upon lack of knowledge and lack of understanding. Many are heard claiming there is no Woman Question, because the position that woman formerly occupied, occupies to-day and will in the future continue to occupy, is determined by her "natural calling," which destines her for wife and mother, and limits her to the sphere of the home. Accordingly, whatever lies beyond her four walls, or is not closely and obviously connected with her household duties, concerns her not.
On the Woman Question, the same as on the general Social Question, in which the position of the working class in society plays the chief role, opposing parties stand arrayed against each other. One party, that which would leave everything as it is, have their answer ready at hand; they imagine the matter is settled with referring woman to her "natural calling." They forget that, to-day, for reasons later to be developed, millions of women are wholly unable to fill that "natural calling," so much insisted upon in their behalf, of householders, breeders and nurses of children; and that, with other millions, the "calling" has suffered extensive shipwreck--wedlock, to them, having turned into a yoke and into slavery, compelling them to drag along their lives in misery and want. Of course, this fact concerns those "wise men" as little as that other fact, that unnumbered millions of women, engaged in the several pursuits of life, are compelled, often in unnatural ways, and far beyond the measure of their strength, to wear themselves out in order to eke out a meager existence. At this unpleasant fact those "wise men" stuff their ears, and they shut their eyes with as much violence as they do before the misery of the working class, consoling themselves and others with "it has ever been, and will ever remain so." That woman has the right to share the conquests of civilization achieved in our days; to utilize these to the easing and improving of her condition; and to develop her mental and physical faculties, and turn them to advantage as well as man,--they will none of that. Are they told that woman must also be economically, in order to be physically and intellectually free, to the end that she no longer depend upon the "good-will" and the "mercy" of the other sex?--forthwith their patience is at end; their anger is kindled; and there follows a torrent of violent charges against the "craziness of the times," and the "insane emancipational efforts."
These are the Philistines of male and female sex, incapable of finding their way out of the narrow circle of their prejudices. It is the breed of the owls, to be found everywhere when day is breaking, and they cry out in affright when a ray of light falls upon their comfortable darkness.
Another element among the adversaries of the movement cannot shut its eyes before the glaring facts. This element admits that there was hardly a time when a larger number of women found themselves in so unsatisfactory a condition as to-day, relatively to the degree of general civilization; and they admit that it is therefore necessary to inquire how the condition of woman can be improved, in so far as she remains dependent upon herself. To this portion of our adversaries, the Social Question seems solved for those women who have entered the haven of matrimony.
In keeping with their views, this element demands that, to unmarried woman, at least, all fields of work, for which her strength and faculties are adequate, shall be opened, to the end that she may enter the competitive field for work with man. A small set goes even further, and demands that competition for work be not limited to the field of the lower occupations, but should also extend higher, to the professions, to the field of art and science. This set demands the admission of woman to all the higher institutions of learning, namely, the universities, which in many countries are still closed to her. Their admission is advocated to the classes of several branches of study, to the medical profession, to the civil service (the Post Office, telegraph and railroad offices), for which they consider women peculiarly adapted;, and they point to the practical results that have been attained, especially in the United States, through the employment of woman. The one and the other also make the demand that political rights be conferred upon woman. Woman, they admit, is human and a member of the State, as well as man: legislation, until now in the exclusive control of man, proves that he exploited the privilege to his own exclusive benefit, and kept woman in every respect under guardianship, a thing to be henceforth prevented.
